Here’s the thing, if you have leather furniture, it’s probably because you love the look of leather furniture. You want to make sure that it continues to look great for as long as possible. However, did you know that leather furniture is very easily damaged, discolored, or dirtied?  Here’s what you need to be doing to keep your leather looking great for a longer time.

Handle Spills Correctly

One of the biggest advantages of leather outside its appearance is its easiness to clean. Instead of immediately seeping into the upholstery like with other fabrics, small spills on leather can just be wiped away. Just be sure to take care of spills quickly and you shouldn’t have an issue. If you spill something sticky, like soda, use a damp rag to wipe the mess away.

One thing to be cautious of when cleaning leather is what chemicals you use. Products that contain detergents can actually damage your leather instead of cleaning up the spills you intended. Try to stick to water to clean messes. If you must use something else, be sure to use a product that is designed for cleaning leather.

Position it Carefully

You probably know that leather furniture shouldn’t be placed outside. However, you also shouldn’t place it in direct sunlight at all. This includes in the path of a window. Try to position furniture on the sides of the room without a window or directly across from a window. If you’re lucky enough to have a lot of natural light and this isn’t a possibility, keep your blinds closed when you aren’t in the room to reduce potential damage. You might also consider keeping a throw blanket draped over your couch when you’re not using it to protect it,

Prevent Scratches

Leather is prone to scratches, so you must take precautions to avoid them. If you have pets, remember that their claws can scratch leather easily. It might be best to keep dogs and cats off of leather furniture altogether. If that’s not something you’re willing to do, consider having your pet’s claws professionally trimmed (not the same as declawing!) or getting them nail covers for when they are on the furniture. You can also lay down a soft blanket on their favorite spot to keep off the leather directly.

You are bound to get a couple of nicks and scratches in your leather furniture over time. If you want to fill these, be careful! Be sure to use only products designed for leather, and test them in an inconspicuous spot such as the back bottom corner first.
